As bed bugs become further resistant to
chemical pesticides the infestations are becoming much more
difficult to treat. These pests are able to hide themselves
in the smallest crevices requiring thorough inspection and
repeat treatments. The first step in treating a bed bug
infestation is to conduct a thorough inspection. The first
areas to inspect are likely to be the headboard, mattress,
box spring and bed rails. Each component must be carefully
inspected to the point of removing screws, searching cracks
and removing the fabric covering from the box spring. Also
inspect the furnishings (pictures, mirrors, nightstands,
etc.) within 10 to 15 feet of the bed or sleeping area. Bed
bugs are known to hide in mattress seems/tufts, underneath
of nightstand drawers and behind outlet covers. Since bed
bugs can disperse throughout a building, it also may be
necessary to inspect adjoining rooms and apartments.
Treating
Bed Bugs
After an
inspection remove all bedding and clothing that is on or
near the infested area. Bag and launder fabrics at a minimum
of 120°F. Wash in hot water with soap and dry on high.
Another effective and efficient option is to place clothing,
toys, shoes, backpacks, etc., in a clothes dryer set at
medium to high heat for 10 to 20 minutes. This will kill all
bed bug life stages and can be done alone or in conjunction
with laundering.
The next
step will be to vacuum the mattress seams, steam cracks or
crevices, apply a treatment spray then cover the mattress
with a bed bug mattress encasement. This entombs any
remaining bed bugs. They are trapped within the mattress
cover and cannot escape to feed. The bed bugs will be
starved to death. This same treatment should be applied to
the box springs. Be sure to remove the protective covering
that is stapled on the bottom of the box spring.
Be sure to
vacuum, steam and spray the headboard, bed rails, bedroom
furnishings, baseboards, outlets and any other areas where
the bed bugs could be hiding. Be thorough and take your time
to ensure proper treatment. Re-inspect the room within the
week and retreat as necessary. Fossil shell dust is also
effective in killing bed bugs. This product is made from
crushed fossil shells and when applied throughout infested
areas will dehydrate and kill bed bugs from the inside out.
